Root Nodules

  • More than 90 percent of all nitrogen fixation is carried out by nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
  • Two kinds of nitrogen fixers are recognised: Free living or non-symbiotic or symbiotic bacteria.
  • The symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria invade the root hairs of host plants, where they multiply and stimulate formation of root nodules the bacteria convert free nitrogen to nitrates, which the host plant utilises for its development.
